Names to Know

(By: AlamoCityHoops Staff)

With only one LIVE period to go, the “Dog Days” of summer are in full effect. We look at some prospects who’ve turned up the heat on the hardwood the last few months.

We’ve had numerous opportunities to keep our eyes on the talent of the Texas Tri-Regions, as they’ve showcased their abilities at our CenTX Hoopsfest, High School Elite Combine, and Summer Hoopsfest. Here's a breakdown of some prospects who's names you'll need to know.

(**Prospects listed are in no particular ranking or order**)

Hunter Venturella SG 6’3” 2020 Homeschool Immanual Christian (Brook Supreme)
Has made every argument to be the #1 prospect in El Paso for the 2020 class. Showed he is more than just a shooter. Put the ball on the floor and used a nice frame to be physical and finish at the tin. Nice stroke and is money from the mid-range as well. Plays hard, not selfish, and will make the extra pass when needed.

Rashod Owens G 6’2” 2020 Roosevelt HS (Carter Elite)

Had plenty of college coaches ask us who #12 was. Great intangibles, talks on the floor, gets into the right position, defensively and offensively. Plays the game with great IQ, and was seen time after time impacting the game in other ways than scoring, making the correct pass, getting a deflection, a steal, or hitting the boards. Improvement in his outside game will send his stock even higher.

Adam Boyce PG 5’10” 2019 New Braunfels HS (NB Unicorns 17U)

Consistently showed he just produces. Above average handles, was the floor general for a well-coached and efficiently ran team. Inside or out, the young man can score, and do so in bunches. Has a strong build, that lets him get in deep and be productive when attacking the hole. Will stop on a dime and hit the perimeter shot, with plenty of 3-point range. Great vision and puts heat on his passes. Is a true point guard and leader.

Mason Pullen SG 6’2” 2020 New Braunfels HS (NB Unicorns 17U)
Saw glimpses of his long-range ability, then finally put it together during our Summer Hoopsfest, dropping 32pts & 7 three pointers in one contest. Elevates, smooth form and release, looks good every time. He just doesn’t rely on the long range, works hard to get open and was constantly seen in motion, fighting for position. Good handles and has no issues handling the rock.

Cortez Ivie PG 5’7” 2019 Killeen HS (Ktown Allstars)
Continued to play at an exceptional level and impressed all on-lookers. People are quick to look at his small stature, but it doesn’t take long to see that he plays like a giant on the floor, and has 100% heart to go with his talent. Quick, great handles, directs teammates all over the court, and will blow by you with his speed, or shoot without conscience if you sluff off. Will be rising in our soon to be updated Super 60 for 2019.

Quentin Johnston F 6’5” 2020 Temple HS (Ktown Allstars)
Explosive athlete, three sport star who just came onto the basketball scene in May, after his track season. 6A State Finalist in the high jump, bronzed with a 6’8” jump, and he uses it very well on the court. Extremely fast off his feet and long arms give him a near 6'10" wing span. Anything near the rim, he will be throwing it down. Did display the ability to put the ball on the floor multiple times, plays tough and usually draws the other teams biggest defender. Stretching his game out to the perimeter and showing he can slash and attack will only solidify his position as a D1 prospect.

Carson May F 6’7” 2020 Westlake HS (New Era Supreme)
Is a load down low, would not be surprised if he’s 200lbs plus, wide shoulders and has good mobility. Showed that he is very capable of stepping out as a stretch four, and showed soft and accurate touch. From the mid-range, to beyond the arc, May was knocking them down. Good footwork, makes him effective down low, and he uses his body well for positioning.

Jaden Moore SG/SF 6’4” 2020 Brennan HS (SABO Blue)
Athletic two guard who has come on strong this summer. Has showcased his all around game and is a threat to score in multiple ways. Will attack you off the dribble and finish at the rim, will rise up and throw it down. Good handles, and he used it in the open floor to his advantage. Was left open too many times on the perimeter and time after time he made opposing teams pay with the set three pointer.

Kyle Castille G 6’2” 2020 Brennan HS (SABO Blue)
Helped form a nice 1-2 punch with Moore, as both of their games are similar. Was a tough guard for defenders. When he wasn’t nailing jumpers, would attack off the dribble and keep defenses off balance. Was very active on the boards for a guard, especially on the offensive end.

Max Smith PG/G 6’0” 2020 Anderson HS (New Era Supreme)
Sharpshooting guard who can get dialed in, and quickly. In one game in front of our staff, nailed 8 treys. Very active just doesn’t settle for the catch and shoot. Is in constant motion and for a smaller guard, showed a scorer’s mentality. Had no issues in racking up buckets off the dribble, or using screens from a teammate, and was deadly from the set position.

Delbert “DJ” Bray 6’4” SG/SF 2020 Westlake HS (New Era Elite)
Intriguing guard/wing who came on during our Summer Hoopsfest. Another Westlake kid who should see more time this fall and has the skillset to contribute. Has a smoothness to his game, never seems rushed, and it showed with his patience in using his jumper. Good shooter who in one contest knocked down 5 three pointers, but showed he’s got the ability to be a slasher and finish in the paint.

Daqwon Kindred SG 6’2” 2020 Roosevelt HS (Dream Supreme)
Impressed bystanders with his overall game, did a little bit of everything. Athletic two guard who in the summer months has begun to stroke the outside shot. It’s another element he’s added to his attacking game and makes him an inside out threat with his athleticism and attacking ability. Also impacts games with his defense. Moves very well laterally and his long arms were causing several loose balls or registered steals.

Jackson Byas SG 6’3” 2020 Steele HS (Dream Supreme)
Looks like Coach Hubbard has another one in the pipeline. Lanky two guard who has the ability to score in bunches, and can heat up quickly. Shot the ball from all over the floor, range was not a problem. Uses his length very well to contort and slither his way to finishes.

In the coming days, we'll also touch specifically on some 2021's who have made plenty of noise.
